Annabelle and Marcelle Beauty Premiere Party Rocks Toronto!

Last week, I went to the much anticipated Beauty Premiere party being hosted by two of my favourite Canadian brands: Annabelle and Marcelle.  The party was held at the uber swanky Thompson Hotel Rooftop.  Check out the view!

The view from the Thompson Hotel rooftop

The venue was packed!  Of course, almost everyone from the Toronto Beauty Bloggers community came out to mingle. :)  I got a little carried away chatting that I didn’t get to snap too many photos, but I have enough to share with you.

Beauty Premiere introduced several exciting new products from the brands.  They had booths set up and a member of their team talked to us about the innovations and benefits of each product.  The makeup and skincare products below will be available by Spring 2012.

Marcelle Renforcils Waterproof Eye Make-up Remover

Marcelle Renforcils Waterproof Eye Make-up Remover is a gel make-up remover with micellar water.  Think about it like this: it’s our beloved Marcelle Essentials Purity Soothing Cleansing Water in gel form.  Not only will it pack the same make-up removing power, but it also contains ingredients that fortify your eyelashes to prevent fallout.  Great idea, no?

Marcelle Xtension Plus Mascara

Marcelle is coming out with a new mascara called Xtension Plus.  It promises to provide extra length and curl.  Apparently it’ll be as good — if not better — than the Power Volume mascara in terms of curling power, so I am very excited about this one!  I received it in my swag bag so I’ll definitely review it after I’ve played with it for a while.

Marcelle BB Cream

Pardon the awful picture quality — the lighting conditions were clearly not something my Canon G11 can handle.  Anyway, what’s big and cool in Asia is now slowly coming to Canada.  What am I talking about?  The super popular BB Cream is supposed to provide a lot of good-for-your-skin ingredients while offering a little bit of coverage to even out your skintone.  Available in two shades: Light-to-Medium and Medium-to-Dark.

Marcelle Gene Youth Skincare

A trio of day cream, night cream and eye cream, they are also coming out with Marcelle Gene Youth Skincare. Unfortunately I don’t have anything to say about these guys because it got too loud in the party and I couldn’t hear anything! Sorry. :S

Annabelle Smudge Paints

The Annabelle Smudge Paints aren’t new, but because they are awesome, they deserve to be shown off in the party.  These are gel liners or cream eyeshadow bases, and they have great staying power.

Annabelle Glitterama Liquid Eyeliner

Eight new colours of Annabelle Glitterama Liquid Eyeliners are coming out as well.

I had a great chat with the lady at the Glitterama booth, but I didn’t get her name!  I was telling her the fact that I try both high- and low-end brands for my blog, and many times I’ve been impressed with how well Annabelle and Marcelle products stack up against the expensive brands.  She told me that they know that, and their marketing team knows that.  I wish more people knew, though.  Every time I recommend the brands to someone who’s not into beauty, they said they haven’t even tried anything from these brands.  But slowly but surely, I think we beauty bloggers are getting that word out! :)

Annabelle Big Show Lipglosses

The Annabelle Big Show Lipglosses are sheer, high-shine, unscented, non-sticky lipglosses.  They feel really nice and moisturizing on the lips.  Oh and, we even had the opportunity to create our own shade. :) !!!

Annabelle Big Show Lipgloss Mixing Station

My favourite guy that night — Mr. Lipgloss Scientist Dude, who by the way, gave me some photography tips as well.

O hai.  This is my lipgloss.  I don’t know what to call it yet, but for some reason “Seduction” keeps popping up.  Haha.

Makeup platter

There were servers who were walking around with hors d’oeuvres, and others who were walking around with platters of makeup.  Yes, eyeshadows, eyeliners, and other makeup free for all!  I’m pretty sure I saw this scene before in my sweet sweet dreams.

My First Lash Extensions by Fembotika.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement to make: my eyelashes are no longer Asian.  Goodbye lash inferiority complex!  I now have lush and long lash extensions.  I went to Fembotika iLash Bar to see Colleen on the recommendation of Lucky on Twitter, and I’m glad I did.  Best eyelash extensions in Toronto?  I believe that!

Colleen, the owner of Fembotika, is extremely passionate about lash extensions.  She shares that her love for false lashes goes way back to when she was 13, when she was always late for class because she had to wear her false lashes first.  She moved to Toronto from Vancouver to pursue her dream of  opening her own lash salon.  At the moment, Fembotika is located inside Redd Hair Studio (1187 King Street West, Toronto), where the lash application process happens on a very brightly-lit bed.

The setup: where the magic happens.

Before Your Appointment

Obviously, you shouldn’t wear any eye makeup when you come in for your lash extensions.  Do not curl your lashes, either.  If you are a contact lens wearer, wear your glasses for the day or be ready to your contacts out when you get there.

It was my first time, so I had to fill out a client information sheet.  It asks about your lash history: whether you ever had lash extensions done, and if you had a bad experience in the past.

The Lashing Process

The first part of the process is the consultation.  Colleen takes a look at your natural lashes, and then you agree on the curliness of the lashes.  There are four types of curls — J, B, C and D — going from the least curly to the curliest doll-like lashes.  I didn’t want mine super curly, and Colleen suggested the B curls would look like C’s on my eyes so we went with those.

After the consultation, a cool gel pad or medical tape is applied on top of the bottom lashes to avoid getting your eyes glued shut.  Individual lashes are applied very close to the roots of your own lashes.  This process can take anywhere between one and two hours.  I got the Go Big or Go Home package ($200) with 80 lashes in each eye.  I found the whole process really relaxing and if I wasn’t so excited, I could’ve definitely fallen asleep.

Taking Care of Your Pretties

For the first 24 hours after application, you should avoid getting the lashes wet to allow the glue to dry completely.  Yes, this means washing around the eyes with a cloth instead of splashing your face as usual.  No saunas or swimming pools, either.

After that, never use waterproof makeup remover on your lashes.  Which means, no waterproof eye makeup.  Wear eye makeup that doesn’t require a separate makeup remover, or get an awesome face cleanser like Philosophy Purity Made Simple, Consonant Body Organic Face Wash, or Weleda Gentle Cleansing Milk.  Mascaras aren’t recommended, but honestly, you won’t need mascaras while wearing lash extensions.  Oh, and never take a curler to your lashes; they curl on their own. :)

If you take care of your lashes, your lash extensions should only fall off when your natural lashes fall off.  Lash extensions usually last 3-4 weeks until they need a fill.

Before and After Photos

And of course, the only reasons why you’re reading this post: the before and after shots. ;)

Update:  My natural lashes are very spaced out, so Fembotika suggests that the lash extensions be feathered next time to give the lashes a fluffier appearance.  The process will take a bit longer, as it involves placing two super fine lashes on one lash.

Oh, and a beauty blogger tip? If you ever plan on blogging about your lash extension experience, get your brows waxed or threaded beforehand for the best photos. I had the unfortunate task of Photoshopping my stray brow hairs for these macro. Such a pain!

Fall/Winter 2011 Hair Trends and hAiRT Show at Hair on the Avenue.

Are you looking for something to do in the city this weekend?  Hair on the Avenue collaborated with local artists to bring us hAiRT, an art exhibit open now until July 31.  On display is an original artwork created by Toronto-based artist Natasha Gouveia.

“I was really moved when I saw the work of Natasha Gouveia,” says Luis Pacheco, founder and co-owner of the Yorkville salon. “The mood and textures in her canvases were similar to our projections for Fall/Winter hair trends so we asked her if she would join us in presenting her upcoming collection,” explaining how the partnership developed into a multimedia show.

The hAiRT show also showcases the salon’s first hair film, called Hazel, which highlights the dark side of hair trends for Fall/Winter 2011.

The exhibit is open to the public at Hair on the Avenue, 112 Avenue Rd.  Call (416) 922-0112 for more information and salon hours, and visit www.NatashaGouveia.org to see more work by the event’s featured artist.

Hair Trends for Fall/Winter 2011

Styling: RAC boutique

If you’ve been wearing your hair lazy and carefree all summer, you better say hello to your hair tools to rock these Fall/Winter hair trends. “The last two seasons had a real laissez-faire attitude in the styling. This season has a really transformative style with an almost mischievous attitude,” says Anthony Ingraldi, co-owner and lead stylist at Hair on the Avenue.

  1. Industrial Sleek: Not for the shy types, the boldest look of the season is cut short to the neck and smooth around the face à la Emma Watson.
  2. A Fascinating Hive: Inspired by the Royals’ fascinators, two-tone hair, whether natural or supplemental, is the new fascinator for this look.
  3. The Shattered Monroe: The shattered wispy bob is asymmetrical and is the perfect style to transition out of summer into the fall.
  4. Rockabilly Chic (my favourite!): This edgy but feminine look combines old-school ’40s rock with ’80s Tiffany-style crimp in a fresh new style.
  5. Mermaid Wave: The top is sleek with a wet look, while the rest of the hair is crimped and brushed out to give a halo effect.

Warm tones dominate colour trends for the colder weather.  Pacheco predicts the following colour trends:

  1. Aubergine and Raven Blue: Brunettes will be enriched with deep plums and night blues.
  2. Rose Gold: Blondes will be warmed up with a rose that’s deeper than strawberry blonde.
  3. Amber Red: Reds will lean towards honey amber tones.

Are You As Excited As I Am? Gimme Fall Now!

I’m in love with the colour trend predictions for this season.  The thought of deep plums on brunettes is driving me crazy!  Doesn’t it sound perfect for the season?  I think I’m ready for fall now!
