I don’t make yearly resolutions, but I think beauty resolutions are important.  For every year that that comes and goes, and the farther away I get from age 20 (that’s 5 years now, ohnoes!), the more important my anti-aging regimen becomes.  Last year I started using serums, heavier creams, regular masks and oils at night.  This year I’m starting fresh with some natural, anti-aging products I received from KORRES.

My KORRES Nighttime Skincare Regimen

KORRES Wild Rose Face and Eye Serum

After cleansing my face, my first layer of hydration is KORRES Wild Rose Face and Eye Serum ($49) all over my face, under my eyes and all over my neck.  It is a nice, light serum that spreads easily and absorbs within a minute of application.  It has a beautiful sweet rose fragrance that makes it so irresistible to my nose.  I love that this one gives nice hydration; oily skin types can wear this one on its own without another moisturizer.  While I can’t confirm its claim to reduce the appearance of fine lines as I don’t currently have them, I have noticed that my skin looks brighter since I’ve started using it.

KORRES Quercetin and Oak Antiageing & Antiwrinkle Night Cream

Before the serum absorbs completely, I follow up quickly with the KORRES Quercetin and Oak Antiageing & Antiwrinkle Night Cream ($59).  It is rich and thick as a night cream should be.  You don’t have to worry about greasy with this one either, as it dries to a skin-like finish.  I fully recommend Quercetin and Oak Night Cream for all skin types — if, and this is a big if,  you can handle the scent.  It has a strong woody scent that may be off putting to some, but I am strangely drawn to it.  With the Quercetin and Oak Night Cream, my skin stays nourished all throughout the night and looks beautifully plump in the morning.  This is a good one, ladies!

KORRES Quercetin and Oak Antiageing & Antiwrinkle Eye Cream

Now that I’m 25, I am noticing that the elasticity and hydration under my eyes are starting to go.  Wah!  Aside from being careful with makeup application, I use KORRES Quercetin and Oak Antiageing & Antiwrinkle Eye Cream ($55) for both night and day.  Its texture is light and fluffy, but don’t let that fool you.  This is pretty potent stuff; the tiniest amount takes care of my undereyes.  Before this came into my life, I have been suffering from dryness on my undereyes that shows when I wore concealer.  Now, that is no longer an issue.  This is a must-have in my skincare regimen now and I am definitely buying it when I run out.  You need it.

MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter in Bright Forecast is my first line of defence against under eye circles every. single. day. It is life changing.

Annabelle Le Big Show Mascara is my favourite mascara of the year. I recommend it to everyone.

Lise Watier Wet & Dry Eyeshadow Quad in Équinoxe + Métamorfix Liquid Transformer was the best makeup palette/set I tried this year. The colours and performance are unparalleled. (Limited Edition for Fall 2011)

Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani in Rouge 406 is a beautiful red lipstick and the formula is divine. I try a lot of lipsticks and think that the Rouge d’Armani is one of the best. I must try more colours next year. (Limited Edition for Fall 2011)

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Usage Dry Oil is one product I can’t stop raving about. What can I say; I just love it so much!  This one isn’t new; it’s a classic that I got to finally try this year.

Velour Lashes in You Complete Me gives me Bambi eyes. That is all.

THANN Jasmine Blossom Set is a staple in my bathroom. I just can’t get enough.

This actually makes me want to get out of bed and hop in the shower in the morning. Oh, and my lazy self has been putting on the lotion everyday, too. This is the most beautiful green that smells like crushed up jasmine buds. Both the body milk and the shower cream moisturize the skin incredibly. I cannot recommend it enough! For anyone, anytime

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-usage Dry Oil ($42 for 100ml). Although not technically a gift set, NUXE Huile Prodigieuse is a champ at multitasking and so luxurious that it makes a fabulous gift. It keeps skin and hair beautifully moisturized and also doubles as a fragrance. It’s a cult product for a reason. Available at Shoppers Drugmart and Beautyphica (get a bonus 50 ml Huile Prodigieuse OR for a limited time here!).

For the new mom or hard working gal who truly deserves a spa day

Pure + simple Super-hydrating Intensive Kit * ($99).  It’s no secret that I’m a Pure + simple junkie, and my newest discovery is the Cellular Repair Face Cream in this set. I’ve been using this medium weight face cream both for day and night and it is a dream to put on.  The Collagen Elastin Plus serum and Skin Restoration Cloth Mask are must haves for a home spa day.  Tip: do the mask in the dark or risk scaring your significant others or pets. For those who are nice… ‘kay maybe the naughty, too

The Body Shop Spiced Vanilla Bath and Body Products * (from $4 to $18 each).  The Body Shop is one of my go-to shops for holiday shopping because of their holiday scents.  My favourite is the Spiced Vanilla, which smells divine and is available in different bath and body products.  If you must have just one for a stocking stuffer, the Body Butter is a no-brainer (and on sale for $10 right now!). Available at The Body Shop stores and online.

Philosophy Sweet Kisses and Merry Wishes Set ($47).  If you have never tried Philosophy shower gels, you’ve been missing out.  Philosophy makes the best shower gels in the scents of the season.  This set contains four (FOUR!!!) shower gels and coordinating lip shines.  Gift it to one special nice person, or break it up as separate stocking stuffers for the naughty ones.  Available at Sephora stores and online.

So you’ve seen my lipstick bandit face.  You haven’t?  Here it is again to jog your memory:

I can say that this is the most makeup I’ve ever worn.  That was A LOT of makeup.  I used mostly long-wearing products like my beloved MAC Blacktrack Fluidline (this even stays on my waterline for a full work day) and Illamasqua Alchemy liquid glitter eyeliner (this liner stays for days on my hand even with regular hand washing).

During the makeup process, Marcelle Essentials Purity Soothing Cleansing Water ($14.50) was a godsend for cleaning up the lines of my mask.  The non-oily formula lets me clean up mistakes without melting the rest of my makeup.  With some cleansing water on a cotton bud, this task was super simple and easy to do.

Now, cleaning up that mask was a massive job. I let out a huge sigh, and started working the cleansing water with a cotton pad all over my face. I am so impressed with this makeup remover! Cleanup was a snap, and two very dirty cotton pads later, I looked like a normal person again.

Just keeping it real, you know.

The cleanser is a rinse-free formula, so it’s great for lazy nights when you just want to take off your makeup without splashing your face. I’ve never personally done this because I live in pollution-central, but really, your face feels really clean after. This is an incredible cleanser. Get it. You won’t be disappointed.

Summer is a tricky season for one’s skin regimen. Cleansing becomes a big deal. You need to moisturize sensitive, possibly sun-damaged skin, but you don’t want to slap on anything too heavy. I’ve been trying a lot of new skincare lately, and it’s time again to talk about them!

Today I’m trying a new review format, called Keep It or Toss It?  It will feature 5 or more product reviews, and each review will be quick — only 5 sentences or less. Here we go!

Cleanser: Consonant Body Organic Foaming Face Wash* ($18). Keep it. This face wash takes off all non-waterproof makeup as well as my all-time favourite, Philosophy Purity Made Simple. It doesn’t make my skin tight or uncomfortable after cleansing. Unfortunately for me, my hand eczema reacts pretty badly to the foam, so I’ll pass it on to my sister.

Eye Cream: Origins Eye Doctor ($34). Toss it. I’m 24 and I have some fine lines under my eyes. Sure, this smells refreshing (like cucumbers). But, it’s expensive and it doesn’t do anything.

Eye Roller: Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Roller ($20). Keep it. I’m a big fan of eye rollers. Naturally, an eye roller that brightens my dark circles, to me, is a pretty good deal. This doesn’t conceal major under eye circles, but it’s great for that extra boost on top of your concealer. Turn around bright eyes.

Toner/Hydrosol: Pure + simple Organic Lavender Hydrosol* ($12.95 for 50ml). Toss it. There’s something about this hydrosol that just did not agree with my nose at all. It doesn’t smell like lavender, or at least the kind that I’m accustomed to. It smells like pee. So no, I’m not going to spray my face with what smells like toilet water. Instead, try Weleda Refining Toner.

Serum: Pure + simple Soothing Mimosa Emulsion* ($39.95 for 50ml). Keep it. This is a light, hydrating serum that I wear under my moisturizer. It is incredibly soothing and cooling on sensitive skin after a hot sweaty bike ride under the sun. Oilier skin types can wear probably wear it as their day moisturizer.

Moisturizer: Origins VitaZing SPF 15 (around $40 for 50ml). Toss it. I bought mine in CCO in Las Vegas for US$27. This moisturizer has garnered so much hype thanks to a YouTube guru, but I thought it’s just alright. It’s a very sheer illuminating tinted moisturizer; one shade only. I like the way this smells and looks on the skin, but I’m pretty sure it causes breakouts every time I use it. Next!

Sunscreen: Pure + simple SPF 30 For Sensitive Skin* ($25.95 for 100ml). Keep it (and buy in bulk when it goes on sale). This is an great mineral sunscreen (none of that -benzone junk!) to wear under makeup as it won’t turn you into a grease ball. German chamomile calms irritated skin. It goes on white, but you can minimize this by patting it on over a face oil (like Argan oil). Pure + simple SPF 30 for Oily/Impure Skin works as just well, and I prefer the scent of that one, too.

Night Cream: Weleda Iris Hydrating Night Cream* ($28 for 30ml). Keep it. I love this almost as much as my holy grail night cream, Martina Gebhardt Black Mud Cream. Both brands are German and all-natural, so I’m pretty sure every person in Germany has perfect skin. While not as greasy as the Black Mud cream — a greasiness I prefer in my night cream, actually — the Iris Night Cream is rich enough to give you perfectly hydrated, plump skin in the morning.

We had just celebrated our first long weekend of the summer — Canada Day eh? — and I spent four blissful days in a rented cottage up north with some friends.  It was a hell of a good time; the sun was there, too, and I caught lots of it (while wearing sunscreen, of course).  Another body product that I have been dying to tell you about is Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Oil ($28).

I’m very lazy when it comes to putting lotion on, but with all the sun I’m bound to get this summer — from the long bike rides to outdoor boot camps to the beach — I’ve been trying to nourish my skin with this body oil.  The oil smells slightly citrusy but not overwhelming.  It moisturizes beautifully without being greasy.  I might even call it magic.  This bright orange oil (almost) transforms my legs into Mariah Carey legs — smooth, radiant, and golden.

Total vanity aside, the Sea Buckthorn Oil is also great for your skin. The formula contains super antioxidants Vitamins A, C and E, as well as essential fatty acids to help moisturize parched skin. Sea Buckthorn berries are known for their healing properties, so their oils are perfect for use on a sunburn if you happened to fall asleep on the dock.  I love Weleda Sea Buckthorn Oil so much that I think I need to get on that 12-step program Janine is on.

There’s a new skin studio in town!  fresh.beautiful: the skin studio recently opened its doors in Toronto on busy Queen Street and I took advantage of their opening week special: $35 for preserve + nurture treatments.  I finally met the pretty Stephanie (yes, the genius behind BlushPretty) who also performed the treatment on me.

The new fresh.beautiful studio is located near the busy corner of Queen and John Streets.  It is a small space, but very bright and spacious.  There are no private rooms in the space, nor do you need to take any clothes off for the treatments.

As a makeup artist, Stephanie had many bridal clients asking her how they can get that glowing beautiful skin on their big day.  What a better way to build a relationship (and good business, too!) than to help treat and nurture their skin?  That’s how fresh.beautiful: the skin studio was born.

The first treatment, preserve, is a crystal microdermabrasion.  By using small crystals and a little vaccuum thingie (that’s the scientific term), the top layer of the skin is sloughed away to reveal a newer, smoother layer.  It didn’t hurt at all, except for a little stinging on my cheeks around my nose, where my skin is quite sensitive.  The sensation is a lot like a cat licking your face, borrowing the words of Lisamarie of Beauty Crazed.  Oh, and just in case you didn’t believe it was working, check out my face dirt in the after below.  How attractive!

After the crystal microdermabrasion therapy, I was treated to nurture, the cold laser light therapy.  You know when you go get your hair done and you always look forward to the shampoo?  Well, this is the shampoo of the preserve + nurture combo.  A cold gel (anti-aging or anti-acne) is applied and massaged on the skin in circular motions.  While I was lying there, I was thinking “wow, this is nice, they even massage your face before you get the laser.”  Wrong!  The massager thingie (again, scientific term) is the laser.  Of course, because there’s a laser involved, your eyes need to be closed and covered for this part.

I sent a few questions to Stephanie after my treatment, so here’s a short Q&A.

My skin is usually in pretty good shape (I chalk it up to good genes!) but I definitely noticed a difference after my treatments.  Right away, I noticed that my face cream absorbed more quickly and easier.  My skin was baby butt smooth, and my nose pores — my problem areas — are less visible and no longer congested.

Have You Had a Crystal Microdermabrasion or Cold Light Laser Therapy Before?

What was your experience?  If you’re curious, this is definitely something I’d highly recommend to anyone.  I’d do it again maybe a week before a big event or vacation, whenever I want my skin to be in perfect shape.

It’s no secret that I’m a liquid foundation kinda gal, but there are days when lazy happens.  On these days, I can’t be bothered to put on several products just to even out my complexion.  Even though I’m meticulous about my eye makeup, I prefer my skin regimen to be quick and easy.  That’s where powder foundation comes in.  It’s my foundation and setting powder in one, and the one that I’ve been using lately is Pure + Simple Pure Foundation in Marzipan ($39.95/compact and $29.95/refill in all Pure + Simple spa locations and online).

I have it in the old refillable plastic packaging.  Now they are actually housed in an adorable refillable cardboard packaging:

To use it, I swipe the compact with my elf kabuki brush, then I buff it in using circular motions all over my face. On areas where I have redness, I go back with a sponge to get more coverage. This foundation gives me coverage that I’m comfortable with (sheer-to-medium coverage).  You can definitely get a lot more coverage with a sponge, but I find that it can get powdery when you layer more. A light dusting with a fluffy brush gives an even matte, fresh look.

I like my foundation to look like skin.  When I’m in a hurry I just brush this on and go, but on most days I spritz it with a setting spray like MAC Fix+ for a less matte and more natural finish.

I really like this foundation because it feels weightless and looks very natural, which are my top two reasons why I would stick with any foundation.  It’s great for normal-to-oily skin as it helps keep the oilies down to a minimum.  The colour lasts an entire work day on my face, but it certainly doesn’t look as fresh.  I’d say it holds up for about 6 hours before needing a touch up.

Pure + Simple Pure Foundation also provides the added benefits of natural sunblock with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.  With the hot Toronto sun we’ll be getting this summer, I’m glad to know that my makeup is working double time by making me look good, and keeping me covered.  Gotta love that!

Since this past winter, I’ve been struggling with really bad eczema on my hands.  At the worst times, I deal with with itching, burning, flaky and broken skin on my palms.  I wake up many nights scratching my hands until they are raw.  When I went to the doctor, I was prescribed with corticosteroids (Betamethasone Valerate 0.1%).  When I get a flare-up, only the prescription cream fixes my hands, but I have concerns with the serious side effects of using these creams in the long term.  Look them up; they are a little too scary to list in a beauty blog.

Diane Lai Soothe

Recently I’ve been using something new and all-natural on my hands.  Diane Lai Soothe ($34) is a miracle spot treatment for my hand eczema.  It is incredibly moisturizing, fast-absorbing, gentle, and non-greasy.  It does not contain: petroleum, phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, and many other things that are bad for you.  To top it all off, it has a light lavender scent that is just divine.

Diane Lai Soothe

In just two weeks of regular use, it’s already apparent that Diane Lai Soothe is super effective.  I use it about 2-3 times a day, along with their body moisturizer, Diane Lai Rejuvenate ($45) as my regular hand cream.  It is tiny compared to the moisturizer (30 ml versus 100 ml), but a dime size of Soothe is all I need for both hands.  My hands are almost fully healed at the moment, and I suffer from less flare-ups.

Switching Up My Soap and Body Wash

I found that harsh, heavily fragranced soaps angered my eczema, so I’ve switched out my regular soaps for those for sensitive skin.  Right now I’m using Dove Beauty Bar for Sensitive Skin (4 for about $5) as my bar “soap”, and Cetaphil Restoraderm Eczema Moisturizing Wash (about $15) in the shower.  I also like Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash (about $10) as another non-irritating option.
