Aaahchoo! Is Allergy Season Wreaking Havoc On Your Skin? Gentle, Soothing Skincare Is Your Friend.

Gaaah! It must be spring! My sinuses are clogged, and my eyes, ears and throat are so itchy. Right now it’s so important to have the proper skincare so that I won’t look like a red hot mess. A good skincare regimen, as you know, starts with cleansing.

In the evening, shu uemura ultime8 sublime beauty cleansing oil ($98 for 450ml online and at Holt Renfrew) takes off almost all my makeup in 30 seconds. The oil is so soothing and effective, and it’s been a staple in my bathroom since fall last year. As you can see, it is well loved. I then do a milk cleanser: Holistic Vanity Damage Care Rejuvenating Rosewater Cleanser ($30 for 100ml online and in Pure + simple spas). It’s so gentle and takes off the last bits of makeup while also soothing skin with rosewater and tamanu oil. All other cleansers really irritate my skin right now, so I really appreciate the soothing feeling I get from this rosewater cleanser. In the shower, I am nothing without Live Clean (baby) Soothing Relief Foaming Wash ($6.99 for 265ml at Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstores, Real Atlantic Superstores, Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix and Walmart). I am obsessed with the soft baby smell of the entire line, so much so that I’m convinced that I am, in fact, just a giant baby. :) Also deserving of an honourable mention is Live Clean (baby) & Mommy Bath and Massage Oil ($6.99 for 126ml), which is enriched with lavender, chamomile and aloe that feels incredibly moisturizing on the skin. The entire Live Clean (baby) line is of course petroleum-, paraben- and phthalate-free, because you wouldn’t want that stuff on your baby, am I right?

Every time the founders of Pure + simple come out with a new line, I do a little happy dance. Minimalist Face Lift Serum ($99.95 online and in Pure + simple spas) is from their latest anti-aging skincare line, and it is fantastic! It is a liquid, much like Pure + simple collagen elastin serum, and I use it to give my moisturizers a boost. This regenerates damaged skin with Vitamin F (linoleic acid, linolenic acid) as well as reduces inflammation and sensitivity. There are two moisturizers that have been saving my sensitive skin since the winter. First, SkinCeuticals Redness Neutralizer ($78 for 50ml, in dispensing doctors, medical spas and high-end spas. List of locations at www.skinceuticals.com/canada) is actually made to prevent redness associated with rosacea. This alcohol-, fragrance-, paraben- and silicone-free formula is gentle and hydrates nicely without any stinging, which is usually a problem for me this time of year. Also, I bought La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra ($31 for 40ml online, and in pharmacies) at the drugstore when my skin was really at its worst in the winter. I still use it now during allergies season, because like the SkinCeuticals, I don’t get any stinging from this and it thoroughly hydrates my skin without being too greasy or heavy for daytime. In the evening, my eyelids become pretty raw from constantly rubbing all day, and Bobbi Brown EXTRA Eye Repair Cream (CDN $80 / US $69 for 15ml online, Sephora and Holt Renfrew) is heaven sent, you guys. This is a heavy, greasy balm so I wouldn’t recommend it under makeup, but for nighttime it is perfect. Again, it’s important to point out that I experience no stinging from this product. :)

Your Ultimate Guide To Beachy Waves, When All You Have Is Limp, Straight Hair

It kinda sucks to be that girl with limp, straight hair in the middle of summer, when the rest of them are rocking gorgeous breezy waves.  Yeah, I was that girl.  But I finally found some products that work for my hair texture, and today, I will share them with you! :) I tweeted my amazing big hair yesterday, and it’s finally time for me to spill what I’ve been using.

Here we go!

If You Absolutely Must Wash Your Hair, Do It Right.

Let’s start in the shower, shall we?  Up until recently I have been buying whatever shampoo and conditioner is on sale in the drugstore.  I figured they’re all the same, you know?  How about SLS-free shampoos?  I tried one years ago and it made my hair look so dull.  Yuck!

For a few months now, I have been exclusively using Live Clean Professional Healthy Balance Shampoo and Healthy Balance Conditioner ($8.99 each, at Wal-Mart) and these are the bomb, kids.  The shampoo gently cleans my hair without nasty SLS, phthalates and parabens, while still keeping my hair and scalp in a healthy balanced state.  The conditioner is amazing; I already finished the bottle.  This makes my hair super duper incredibly soft without that heavy silicone-y feeling, because it restores hair’s natural moisture with vitamin complex B5, E and C.  It really works. :)

Outside the Shower, Prepping Your Hair with the Right Product is Key.

Apply a volumizing mousse or foam all over your towel dried hair.  Roughly blow dry your hair, pulling up and away from the roots to get the most lift.  My old standby is Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam.  Seriously, I’m on my second bottle of this stuff.  It gives my hair body and texture without crunchiness or stickiness.

The other option — which I read from BEAUTY EDITOR, and is totally groundbreaking — is to use dry shampoo on (dry) clean hair.  I just got the Dove Refresh+Care™ Invigorating Dry Shampoo ($4.99 to $7.99, at drug, grocery, and mass merchandise stores across Canada), and that works nicely, too.  I just spray it all over my hair, and it does the trick.  And my oh my it smells divine!

If Your Hair Is In Between Washes, Freshen Up that Hair.

I’m new to dry shampoos, but man, do I love it now!  I have been using a small can of Batiste Blush Dry Shampoo on dirty hair days.  Spray it on, leave for about 2 minutes (I usually put on mascara), then brush out.  Pick up your jaw from the floor.  Your hair is big, yes? :)  Ahhh-mayyy-zing (Oprah voice).

My new favourite thing: Big hair!!!

You Absolutely Need a Great Beach Spray.

I bought the infamous Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray ($29) recently, but promptly returned it.  It does nothing for my straight hair.  Instead I am using a very affordable and effective alternative: Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray ($11.99).  I spray this on when my hair is about halfway dry, when my hair has that wet wave running through it.  Then I just let it air dry completely!  It has that coconut-y beachy scent that is intoxicating.

I think this works because it’s not as heavy as the Bumble & Bumble, so it doesn’t weigh down the finest, straightest hair.  So great!

I also use it as a setting spray after I use a heat tool.  Speaking of which…

If You Want/Need To Use A Styling Tool, Invest in a Good Flat Iron.

Let’s face it: sometimes the only way for straight hair to really hold a wave or curl is to use a heat tool.  I find flat irons work best for my hair as they get much hotter than curling irons.  I am still madly in love with my GS Professional Dual Pro Iron (review, available at Trade Secrets).  For beachy hair, I use the technique described in this video (scan to 2:30 to watch the tutorial).

Now, you have all the tools. :)  Hope you try them and that they work for you, too! :)  Do you have straight hair that doesn’t hold a curl?  What products do you use to get fullness and texture in your hair?

Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment *. Don’t be fooled by the lightness of this treatment. Even though it isn’t thick, it smooths out my hair beautifully in the shower. Every time I use this, my hair looks shiny and is immediately tangle free for after-shower brushing. Available at Trade Secrets (www.tradesecrets.ca).

Live Clean Baby Shampoo & Wash ($6.99). I’m on my second (huge) bottle of this baby shampoo & body wash. I’m a huge fan of the Live Clean brand; they are proudly Canadian, SLS-, phthalate, and paraben-free, which makes them super gentle for babies and big babies alike. ;) This works well as a shampoo and body wash because it doesn’t strip the skin dry. During bouts of really bad eczema flare-ups, this was the only soap I could use that didn’t irritate. Available at drugstores, grocery stores, Walmart and Zellers.

Holistic Vanity Rosacea Care Skincare Line * ($26 – $57). Founded by Kristen Ma (also co-founder of Pure+Simple), this line of products geared towards rosacea sufferers is super effective for hydrating sensitive skin. I suffered from a bit of skin sensitivity this winter, and my skin immediately drank up the Soothing Pomegranate Seed Lotion ($57) and Comforting Camellia Oil ($57). The oil can be a bit greasy for day use, but I am obsessed with it for my nighttime skincare regimen. It smells great, too! The whole line contains all-natural anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric, aloe vera juice and sea buckthorn, and is 89% to 100% organic. Available at Pure + simple spas in the Greater Toronto area and online.

eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm * ($3.99). I’m late to the eos Smooth Sphere train, but I do love these little spherical balms! Not only are they cute, but they do a great job at keeping my lips from getting chapped. They are addictive, but it’s nothing to worry about; this little lip balm does not contain petrolatum, so go ahead and get obsessed all you want. :) Available at at all major food, drug, and mass retailers.

Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 * ($55) This velvety serum is great for a major hydration boost. What I love most about it is how it primes the skin beautifully for makeup application. It freshens the skin and doesn’t leave it greasy or oily. Available at Shoppers Drugmart.

LUX Spa (www.lux-spa.com). Take a break from shopping and indulge in a relaxing mani-pedi at the new LUX Spa Downtown Toronto location (211 Yonge Street, Mezzanine Level / 416.367.8414) across from the Eaton Centre. The mani-LUX ($38) and pedi-LUX ($58) services include a moisturizing scrub that takes the winter skin off immediately. While you’re there, indulge in some amazingly scented LoveFresh (www.lovefresh.com) products; I can’t get enough of the Vanilla Bean lotion. Mmmm!
