Hair Thinning and Hair Loss Solutions

My postpartum hair loss started around 4 months after baby arrived. My daughter just turned 7 months and yes, the hair loss is still an ongoing issue.

Luckily I am able to test products to help grow, add volume, and strengthen my existing strands to prevent further hair loss from happening. After months of use, I am happy to report some fantastic hair thinning/loss solutions that may help you too, whether your hair loss is hormonal, or you have naturally thin hair.

FAST Shampoo Conditioner

To Encourage Hair Growth

F.A.S.T. Shampoo and Conditioner* ($34.95 at Rexall, select Trade Secrets and fine hair salons). This works, guys. Anyone that I talk to who’s tried it agrees with me. This is one that you just have to keep using for several months to see results, but it will be worth it. I used this during my pregnancy and my hair grew like weeds, and now as a mommy with hormonal hair thinning issues, I am still seeing fast hair growth while I use this hair system. If you are trying to grow out your hair, you need this.

To Instantly Lift Hair at the Roots

NIOXIN Diamax Advanced Thickening Xtrafusion Treatment* (in select hair salons, Ulta). This is a fantastic root lifter and overall volume booster. Spritz on at the roots while your hair is damp and massage in gently. After I blow dry, this treatment plumps up each strand with its thickening ingredients and really creates a look of a fuller head of hair.

NIOXIN Diamax Advanced and Kérastase Initialiste

To Strengthen and Reduce Breakage

Kérastase Paris Initialiste Advanced Scalp Hair Concentrate* ($56 in select hair salons). This one isn’t new to me (click here for 7-day challenge), and I still believe that it works. This is a treatment for your scalp rather than your strands. It makes my hair soft and manageable, strong against breakage, and more substantial.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

To Extend Time Between Hair Washing

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo ($29 at Sephora). I admittedly am still not 100% on the dry shampoo bandwagon, but I have to say this is the best one that I’ve tried out there, and it comes highly recommended by many. This one feels less grimy than others, smells great, and absorbs oil well.

  • They’re not really “products” but the biggest things that helped with my hair thinning were getting my thyroid problems diagnosed & starting treatment for that, and spironolactone. After I started taking spironolactone for acne I noticed I was losing a LOT less hair. A month or so ago I decided to have another go with minoxidil/Rogaine to see if that will help some of it grow back in. Though I’m not sure whether they’re safe to use if you breastfeed.

    • Great points, Nicci! Definitely important to find out what’s going on internally.

I also had thinning hair after pregnancy…and the hormonal shifts that followed years later. The biggest things that helps where from my diet. IRON! I can’t stress how amazing adding this supplement changed my hair loss in DAYS. Feramax 150 is the best. And to echo the Nicco, looking at internal factors like thyroid are so important. Also – when you have a baby, you just gotta wait until your body settles down. It’s temporary. Things will change again. I searched advice from ND’s to acupuncture to Western med. Dr.’s, and really, I think it was just a matter of time and a matter giving your body what it’s lacking at the time.

    • Yes I agree with you 100%! The hormones definitely need to settle down to see everything normalize again.

  • The E.A.S.T products are calling my name!

I found switching to a sulfate free shampoo helped reduce hair loss because it didn’t dry out my scalp. Also great for reducing dryness/breakage in the hair. To encourage hair growth, I actually use a product called Shen Min that I found in a health food store – helped thicken and regrow some sparse eyebrows in a few weeks.
