The New Shower Essentials

I’ve added an extra 5 minutes to my “getting ready” bathroom routine. If you know me, this is a really big deal. This means I wake up 5 minutes earlier when I would normally hit the snooze button just one more time. These, ladies and gents, are my new pre- and post-shower body essentials.

You read it here first: I will never ever buy another anti-cellulite cream. They just don’t do anything. What does work to fight off those cottage cheese legs is this bad boy — my new best friend: a good ol’ stiff dry brush. My dry brush is from Whole Foods, but you can get them at any health food store (here’s one on Well.ca). On dry skin, I start from my feet, and in circular motions, go up both legs, making sure to get the problem areas thoroughly. Then I do arms, stomach and chest, towards the heart. Same for the back. The first couple of times you use this, it might be painful and rough on your skin, so go easy. The more you do it, the more your skin will get used to the sensation and it won’t hurt anymore. Dry brushing helps drain your lymphatic system and strengthens immune system by detoxifying your organs. Sounds like the perfect companion for flu season, doesn’t it? If you haven’t tried it, you really should.

In the past years, I never used to bother with body lotions after the shower. It just seemed like such. a. tedious. step. and soooo mundane. Sure I love the feeling of silky soft skin, but I need more than that. I want a luxurious experience. Give me an intoxicating fragrance and I’ll be sold. This winter will be the first time I’ll be free of itchy, crocodile skin thanks to the following products.

I am absolutely obsessed with Osmia Organics Sunset Body Oil ($24 for 2oz / $85 for 7.5oz online). It’s a spicy vanilla jasmine and I just want to bathe in it. Notes are jasmine, vanilla, coriander and Italian bergamot. The result is an sexy, mood-enhancing scent that I want to wear as perfume. I use it on wet skin (like, don’t dry off with a towel post-shower). A little goes a long way; four to five drops will cover an entire leg. I close my eyes and take a big whiff or two while it dries. Once it dries, skin so soft that you can’t stop touching yourself (haha!). Divine, you guys. You just have to experience it yourself. The only bad thing I could think of is that my bottle is too small. I should’ve bought the big bottle.

Another exciting discovery is from a familiar brand known for its infamous hair oil. Moroccanoil Body Butter abundant nourishment* ($52 for 190ml in salons, spas, and online) is a luxurious and silky body butter that melts into the skin. It has the same heavenly fragrance as the original Moroccanoil Treatment, which I actually used to slather all over my body because I loved it so much. I apply on damp skin to lock in moisture. The body butter contains argan, shea, cocoa and mango butters to boost moisture and lock it into the skin. The result is zero greasiness, just pure love on the skin.

Tl;dr — my silky soft skin smells so good that I can’t stop sniffing my forearms.

Do you have a pre- and post-shower body routine? What are your favourites? What do you think of anti-cellulite creams? Have you found one that works for you (fight me!)? LOL. I genuinely want to know. :)

Very interesting! I don’t know if I’m ready to add in a dry brush into my routine yet (5 extra minutes of sleep is a lot!) but I definitely want to be more strict about moisturizing my body. That oil sounds great and so does the MoroccanOil body butter. I will look into them!

A great scent to perk up your senses is worth the 5 minutes, if you ask me. ;) The little luxuries make a girl feel so pretty!

Haha are you allergic to fragrance? I just can’t get enough of essential oils recently. I wanna love them all.

I still have to get a dry brush! LOL.

Oh Larie! Haha. It gets pretty addictive once you get it into your routine.

I’ve heard that MoroccanOil has really good body products; supposedly their hand cream is awesome too! And who doesn’t love Osmia? I’ve got a dry brush but mine is way too rough on my skin and I dread using it… I should probably get a softer one.

I want to try the hand cream! And the candle, too! Oh I need the candle.

My brush hurts the first couple of times I start using it again. Just keep at it and your skin will actually tolerate the roughness after a while. :) You definitely want stiff bristles though!

The shower has become a new favourite part of my mornings, Liz. I think I have to start waking up earlier so I can lotion/oil for longer. :)
