Bridal Beauty: Nails

Countdown: 5 weeks to go.

So I don’t know what to wear on my nails. I need to have Shellac on my finger nails for sure, as this klutzy girl ruins manicures after 10 minutes of leaving a salon. But what shades for my fingers and toes? 🙂

The traditional route is a sheer, clean, almost naked pink like OPI Bubble Bath (not a French manicure, not for me). A peachy rose that I’ve never seen before but I just adore the swatches of this one: OPI Malaysian Mist. I think something like this would be great on our beach getaway, too. I’m not superstitious but I just love the idea of wearing a colour — something blue — like this periwinkle blue Butter London Lady Muck.

For my toes, I’m thinking red or burgundy. We’re headed to a beach honeymoon right after the wedding, so I need something that’ll work for the beach as well (a red creme?). Or I can change it when I get there, whatever! These are my wedding shoes. They’re from Anthropologie, and awesome doesn’t even begin to describe them.

Side note: these aren’t my original wedding shoes. I got a pair that I couldn’t walk/balance in, so I made the very wise decision of replacing those with non-stiletto heels instead.

Maybe a vampy burgundy like Essie Wicked? Perhaps a moody “greige” like Chanel Particuliere? How about a pain-in-the-ass-but-I-can’t-not-love-it glittery gold a la Deborah Lippmann Boom Boom Pow?

  • LOVE love love your shoes!! Definitely a burgundy for the toes.

I’m not a fan of french mani’s either (I thought I was the only one.) I would do a neutral/pink nail on you – like Malaysian Mist – with Boom Boom Pow on the tips or in your ring finger. But no matter what, you NEED glitter on your nails 🙂

    • Thanks Maria! I think I like burgundy most on toes as well.

So I *need* glitter on my nails, eh? I’ll see what I can do. 😉

  • Your shoes are so purty! Gonna show off your toes fabulously, no matter what you pick.

I went vampy all the way! 😉 Dior Shadow on fingers and Dior Tuxedo on toes (something blue!). But I went to Vancouver, not HI, afterward, LOL. So I didn’t need beach ready toes. I’m not a huge fan of the barely there pinks, and the glitter prolly won’t last through your vacation. HAHA I don’t know what to pick – I basically chose the day before my wedding, LOL.

    • Hahaha I don’t knowwww Larie! That’s not helpful at all. 😛

I’ll probably hate the glitter as my vacation goes on. I think that’s a no for the chunky glitters.

  • Whoa, the wedding shoes are AWESOME! I’d indeed pick something like Essie Wicked for the toes in that case. I might go for a “nude” on the fingernails, but not really a la OPI Bubble Bath. My favorite nudes are Dior Incognito and Chanel Frenzy. I just think they have a bit more character!

    • Ohh I like your favourite nudes, Sunny! Those colours look straight up grey and dull against my skin tone though. 🙁 I definitely need something warm especially now with my very tanned skin.

Thanks for chiming in! Looks like it’ll be burgundy for the toes.

      • Gah, so jealous you’re tanned! LOL My beef with some nudes is they can be sheer and streaky. If you find one that applies impeccably, then HECK YES it can be gorgeous!

  • I’m so torn about what I would do, too. I love the idea of a nice neutral pink on your nails with Boom Boom Pow! as an accent. I do that all the time and it always looks so glam. You could even just use the glitter in the moons so you just get a flash of sparkle.
Can’t wait to see what you decide on!

    • Thanks for chiming in, Stephanie! I think I like the idea of a glitter fade on a neutral pink. Something like that I’d do, but not an in-yo’-face glitter. It’ll have to be a quiet sparkle. 🙂

Malaysian MIst would look great on your skintone- I used to have that and loved it. Think of all the times your hand will be seen, admired and photographed that day, and envision yourself with that shade of polish doing all those things- showing off ring, handing over the bouquet, holding hands to cut cake together, clapping, dancing, etc. I am thinking classic and understated is best so I vote for one of those. Also consider if you are going on a honeymoon right away you might not want to or have time to do anther mani/pedi so go with something that will look great on the beach(or wherever you are going). Also LOVE Lady Muck idea as an accent or for toes. Or the vamp for toes, like Wicked, sounds fun and great for those shoes! May I also suggest- OPI Hopelessly In Love(sheer pink nude),OPI Hawaiian Orchid (sheer Pink iridescent) Zoya Kennedy(nude pink plus a touch of greige), Estee Lauder So Vain(nude with gold micro shimmer) and Sally Hansen Complete Cafe AuLait(beige nude with microshimmer). SO excited for you! thanks for sharing the joy!

    • Amazing recommendations, Lorraine! Those are beautiful shades you picked. 🙂

      • Lorraine

PS, if you are thinking a white on your tips, check out Rescue Beauty Lounge Moxie. It flashes gold and is perfect for any “red carpet” type occasion. ALso did you see the Lady Muck manis for the Lela Rose show? Probably too trendy for your wedding but sweet nonetheless. Lady Muck half moon with a Pink Ribbon(sheer pink) on the rest of the nail.

What fabulous wedding shoes! I love the fact that you’re also going for comfort; after all, if you can’t enjoy yourself fully on your wedding day, what’s the point? Without knowing what your wedding dress looks like, or your personal tastes, it’s hard to give you options, but from the shades you’re showing here coupled with what you’ve written, I have a few suggestions. Since it’s a beach honeymoon (yay!) and you’re already leaning towards something a bit more vibrant for the toes, why not consider a more aqua shade? The BL you’re showing is a gorgeous hue, but might end up looking a little too tame once your toes hit the sand. As to fingernails, if you don’t want to go the traditional route (and I’m 100% with you on the no French manicure deal – shudder), you could consider a more oxblood shade of red (Essie’s Wicked – which I love – may wind up looking black in lower light). If you want to go more traditional but with a twist, how about white on your fingernails? It’s clean, sharp, edgy and I’ve had a love affair with that shade since early Spring – love how it looks on both hands & feet!

Let me know if you need any more suggestions!

    • Thanks Eugenia for your suggestions! I like the idea of going brighter for toes — like Essie Turquoise and Caicos? I just don’t know how it’ll look with the burgundy shoes. Thoughts?

I do love a white nail. I love that! Traditional with a twist. I’ll definitely consider it! <3

      • Eugenia

Turquoise & Caicos from Essie is an obvious choice – or any other aqua shade you may already own. As for how it’ll look with the shoes, one option is to swatch it/wear it and see how you like the look (a very interesting & attractive contrast!) or you can muddle up the vividness of the shade by applying a grey hue first followed by one coat of the aqua & voilà: your own unique shade! With regards to white on the fingernails, you can either go opaque (Butter London Cotton Buds) or more jelly like (Rescue Beauty Bella, or OPI Funny Bunny). Just a few more ideas thrown your way, but no matter what you decide on, you will look utterly amazing!

  • Alisa W.

I love the ‘something blue’ idea. That is such a lovely shade and would look beautiful with your skin tone!

    • Thanks Alisa! I hope you’re doing great!

  • Have you seen Mimosas for Mr & Mrs? It’s probably my favorite OPI shade… plus the name is kind of perfect for a wedding 😉 It’s like a more opaque Bubble Bath (it’s still a bit sheer, though)

    • I just looked it up! I love it, Catherine! 🙂 Thank you for the recommendation!

  • Ooh I love the idea of blue! Also, loving the Chanel. I think beiges are the new classic’s and the Chanel would be perfection! So fun to plan!!

  • Toya

Hmm. I vote a vampy red creme for toes and an edgy beige like Particuliere on fingers. It’s so tough! I do like the idea of not doing ‘traditional’ though – I mean, when you’re a beauty guru you kinda gotta rock it out, doncha think? Whatever you choose, you’re gonna look HAWT! 🙂

    • Hahaha right, Toya? I feel like it’s walking the red carpet for real and everyone’s going to be looking: who are you wearing? What’s on your nails? Face? Hair? xD

  • Hez

Hi! I vote for a neutral hand ..the blue might become very dated 20 years from now? I love red or vampy toes..they say classic glam. Anyway that’s my humble vote. Those shoes are to die for! 🙂 Happy wedding!

    • Thanks Hez! I don’t really mind looking dated as you say. Hey, it is 2013 so I don’t think it’s such a bad thing looking like it’s 2013. 🙂 It’ll be fun to look back on my current tastes at least, and I can already see my future 50-year-old self cringing and I LOVE IT.

  • I would never get a french manicure either for my wedding, so I really like your idea of a classic soft pink. I like the idea of blue nails even more though! How fun would that be? For toes, I love a red creme!

  • I think I’d go with a classic finger nail (Bubble Bath would be a beaut) and a spunky, unexpected toe nail like Lady Muck. It wouldn’t clash with your cute shoes, but would still be a fun way to include “something blue” into the equation! Please let us know what you end up going with! I don’t have my shoes yet (similar prob as you – too high/too skinny of a heel on the original pair I bought so I’m seeking shorter, less back-breaking shoes!) and have no idea what kind of nail action I’m going to do, either! I do kind of like a neutral with maybe some silver glitter on top like Essie Set in Stones. But who knows. I have 7 months to obsess over this, lol!
