Bridal Beauty: Hair Up or Down?

Can we talk about weddings? :) Our wedding is two and a half months from now. Wow! When we got engaged in November 2011, our wedding date seemed so far away. Now it’s almost here. MEEP! I want to talk about the beauty side of weddings starting with hair. :)

My hair will be in very good hands. My hair artist for the big day is Stephanie at BlushPretty. I have been working with Stephanie on the BlushPretty team since 2012, and she is an amazing hair and makeup artist. I know that any style I ask, she can flawlessly execute. The question is… what style should I choose?

Bridal Hair Inspirations Up or Down

I am in love with two hairstyles: a casual loose updo, and a glamorous side swept waves. I just can’t decide. They are two totally different styles.

I guess you’ll need a bit more information to help me choose, right? Without revealing much, my dress is strapless. I am wearing a fingertip length veil. I am getting clip-on hair extensions to add volume and length. For makeup, I’m thinking of going with soft grey smoky eyes, rosy cheeks and lips. My colours are peach and gold, so it’s soft/romantic with a hint of glamour.

So, dear readers, what do you think? :)

I say up for practicality. Mine holds an updo better than a…down-do… Plus if it’s up it will never be in the way. Love your choices!

P.S. If you and Mr. Geeks plan to…ahem…you know… between the wedding and reception, then DEFINITELY don’t have an updo. A friend of mine had a rather unfortunate “half-do” that told everyone exactly why they were delayed in arriving to the reception. Awkwaaarrrrd!

Bwahahahaha Alison! There’s no time for that. That is so AWKWARD. Damn.

Up! Nothing more beautiful than loose waves in a low bun.

Up! Since your dress is strapless, it shows off your neck, which could be uber sexy. :P

I have to work on my upper body to tone the hell out of it. :)

My sister got married in January and when we were doing her hair trial run, she tried both up-dos and having her hair down. On a day to day basis she wears her hair in a pony or messy bun, so she decided to have it up for her wedding since she would feel most comfortable that way! So I vote that you wear a style that makes you feel comfortable and like you are being ‘yourself’!

Thanks Julie! I think I feel comfortable with either style. :)

I vote for a loose, casual updo!

Although you’ll be getting married in the autumn I’d vote for an updo. Firstly, from experience, it keeps your hair out of the way as you will feel hot (due to nerves, blushing, embarrasment when aaaaaallll those eyes focus on you – I never forget that moment even 4 years later!). Also I think it looks romantic and shows your neck off to good advantage, it can give a really elegant body line.

Good luck, I hope the wedding goes well. I don’t comment often on your blog, but I had to today. I’m sure you’ll make a beautiful bride.

Thank you Attia! Noted. :) I do get pretty sweaty on a day to day basis, so, an updo is probably best in my case.

  • Brianna

I don’t know how well your hair holds a curl, but nearly EVERYONE I’ve seen sporting their wedding hair down has it fall flat and look like a hot mess by the end of the night. Based on that, I’d recommend putting it up. Plus it does look very romantic with a strapless dress. :)

Thank you for chiming in, Brianna! My hair’s not that great at holding curls, but I do have extensions that I think have more texture than my own hair.

I also heard from a friend that with all the hugging you’re gonna do to greet guests, they are just going to flatten and muss up the hair so much. I think I’m leaning towards a loose updo now.

Joining the chrorus – up do! I love the ones you posted. I can totally see you rocking the one that Michelle has up there!!

I think I like that or top right the most. :) Thanks Maria.

The bride of the wedding I was just in wore her hair down, and it looked quite lovely. Having said that, I kind of lean toward updo’s because it tends to be something we do infrequently and so it looks more ‘special’ I think. But I suspect you’ll look fantastic either way Arianne :D

I do feel a bit more dressed up when I have my hair up, I absolutely agree!

I love all the hairstyles you posted (Michelle Williams gets me every time), and any of them would be gorgeous. Just something to think about: I had my hair down at my wedding but during photos and the reception (oh the dancing! my hair was everywhere!) it felt fussy and I wished it was just in one place and I wouldn’t have to fuss with it. That being said, it was exactly what I wanted for the ceremony and the photos (with the help of my bridesmaids) were perfect. If you have a friend who’s a hairstylist perhaps you can do a post-ceremony hair change? :)

You would look stunning with it down in cascading waterfalls of curl perfection, curlfection if you will. However, what one must also consider is what your activity level will be at the event. Are you planning on gettin’ jiggy on the dancefloor? You may get tired of dealing with down hair. I’m a big fan in general of wearing hair up b/c it get hot and staticky and sticks in people’s beards with they hug me, so mine will def be up on wedding d-day. I just like the idea of not having to fruit with it once it’s done! Can’t wait to hear your final decision!

      Curlfection. <3

I think I'm going to wear it up!

Yass! Woohoo! I’d love to know what other decisions you’re making when it comes to beauty and whatnot. I’m still trying to figure out my nail polish situation. I think I’ve got it narrowed down to OPI Mod About You or Sweet Heart. But I’ve got 8 months left to change my mind, lol! I’d love to know what a makeup artist plans to do for her special day!

Will definitely post more wedding-related beauty things. It’s too much fun and girls are *SO* into this stuff! Didn’t know you were planning your wedding, too! Oh so much fun.
