Sweat-proof Makeup Tips From Your Neighbourhood Sweaty Betty

Sweatproof makeup full face 1

When temperatures start to rise, a change to my makeup routine is an absolute necessity. You see, I zip around Toronto on my trusty bicycle on my way to and from work, to events and errands, etc. and sweat happens. For this girl, sweat pours by the buckets. Ask everyone who’s seen me show up at events with beads of sweat on my forehead. Get the picture? Because of this I’ve had to find makeup that doesn’t melt in the heat. My makeup has to last from desk to dinner.

Sweatproof makeup products

Products used: Benefit Cha Cha Tint, Givenchy Noir Couture Waterproof Mascara, MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Brows in #40 Brown-Black, MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge in #18 Coral – new for Summer 2013

For my base makeup, I forgo the heavy foundation if I can and just conceal where I need it: under the eyes, on blemishes and red areas. The rest of my routine gets streamlined, too. Eyeshadow, eyeliner and several cheek products get the boot. To create a “summer-ized” face, all I need is brow corrector, mascara, radiant blush and a non-sticky glossy lipstick. Coral is always a hot colour in the summer and yes — I do hoard all the coral lipsticks and blushes I can find. No – I don’t think I have a problem. 😉

Sweatproof makeup eyes

Three layers of mascara on top and bottom lashes create a big-eyed, false lash look. Lashes for days!

Sweatproof makeup cheeks

Blend cheek tint in using a finger, or apply directly on to your blush brush and blend on to your cheeks. Smile!

Sweatproof makeup lips

Apply lip colour in very thin layers. I used two sheer layers, blending and pushing the product into my lips with a finger, then topped that off with a clear gloss.

I always wondered what makes these products stand up to sweat so well. Today I finally noticed that they all share the same properties (gosh I’m genius!); they have a thin consistency, dry quickly, and layer exceptionally well. Because of the quick drying time, you really have to pay attention and blend quickly before they set, or else you’ll end up with unblended makeup all day long. 😉

Now you’re ready for your next summer party! If you end up by the pool, at least you know your makeup will stay in tact even after a dip or two. 🙂

  • Hey Arianne, first of all: LOVE THE NEW LAYOUT!

Second, love the look! I need to try an Aqua Rouge soon, though I don’t mind reapplying my lipstick a couple of times a day 😉

    • Thank you Sunny! 🙂 I personally think the Aqua Rouges are better in the darker shades rather than these pastel ones. These can get kinda patchy if you’re not careful. 🙂

  • Loved this post. I always get so sweaty in the summertime as well and these tips/products look great!

    • Thank you Margo! 🙂 I hope you find ones that work for you, too!

  • Haha, your a cutie and a beauty! I love that coral lipstick! Make Up For Ever aqua line is such a great sweat proofing line. Loving the layout too!

  • Vanessa

Hey Arianne and everyone else! I bike commute too.

It’s a bear. I’m really interested in what you have to say about sun protection. I don’t wear foundation and rarely wear concealer, so that isn’t the problem. I want a cheap sunscreen so I don’t feel bad about smearing it all over the exposed areas. But the sunscreen melts my make-up, makes me break-out if I leave it on for too long, or I have to keep washing it off when I get to my destination and reapplying it later which also gets rid of my make-up.

I’m just about to give up and go make-up free for summer.

    • Hi Vanessa, I do use a sunscreen, but a different one on my face. My favourite is SkinCeuticals. It wears nicely under makeup. I do this before I leave the house. It’s really velvety and lightweight. I think you’ll love it. I’ve gone through 2 bottles of that stuff already.

In the really hot days of summer, I don’t really wear foundation or concealer while I ride. I usually put on my makeup (VERY little) when I get to work. I wipe my face, spritz rosewater, do sunscreen then buff mineral powder quickly. That’s really the only way that works for me.

  • LOL but you really are a genius because this look! I can’t get over it, so glowy and fresh and perfect for summer. Currently rifling through my stash to find similar products so I can be a slightly cuter Sweaty Betty than my usual messy self hahaha. Love the post, Geekz!

    • Thanks Morzelz! Right? We can always be a little bit cuter even while sweating.

  • You’re so good to bike around Toronto. When visiting last summer, I was thinking to myself there’s no way I could do it. It looks so stressful.

Really enjoyed this post! I’m a sweaty betty as well and mostly have problems with my foundation staying on!

  • Icaria

Looove the new layout! I must try Cha Cha Tint, I’ve been tempted for a while but on you it’s beautiful and since it’s sweat proof, I need this in Montreal! 🙂

  • Thanks for those great tips Arianne! The summer seems to finally have started here and I’ll need it ^^. I especially love the blush and the coral lips here, so pretty on you!

  • what a brilliant title! thanks for the tips. Though the sun is wonderful and makes you happy.. it can become your worst enemy!!! Also, you look beautiful. 🙂

  • You are not the only woman sweating off her makeup during the summer time, that’s for sure. Thank you for sharing these great products that work for you. I also find that applying a thin layer of BB cream with some tint and some SPF works well and you avoid the smearing of foundation and the caking of powder. Summer time is the perfect time for the more natural look- I think!
