What Men Want: Beauty Products and Tools Edition

I’m writing this post on behalf of Mr. Geeks. He is your typical man when it comes to beauty and grooming: very anti-product and when he finds something that he likes, he sticks to it forever. No exaggeration.

I asked him to write this post himself but he doesn’t know the beauty jargon. If he did post an entry, all we’d get is “This is X. I like it. It works. /grunt” πŸ™‚

There is one beauty/grooming tool in particular that he constantly raves about: a nail clipper. Specifically, Sally Hansen Clip and Catch Nail Clipper ($4.99 at Well.ca, and drugstores). It solves the first-world problem of getting nail clippings all over the floor and well, everything. A plastic compartment catches clippings until you’re done, then you can dispose of them properly in the sink. Simple but kinda genius, eh? “Why hasn’t anyone else thought of this?” He tells all his friends about it. Haha.

A black background is manly, don’t you think? I briefly considered using bacon as a backdrop…

I gave him this after he complained of irritated dry skin on an especially cold week: Dot & Lil Repair + Calm After-Shave Serum ($30 online). The serum moisturizes with rice bran and avocado oils, then calms the skin with calendula. This is lightly scented essential oils of tea tree and cedarwood, so it doesn’t smell girly. This oil-based serum soaks into the skin immediately, which he really liked. Boys don’t like anything greasy so this one gets a thumbs up. I noticed that it does moisturize well with only a couple drops for his chin and cheek area. πŸ™‚ I used this to calm my skin post-wax and it is excellent for that, too.

I gotta give him props for trying. One day I presented him with a box of products, including Head & Shoulders Deep Clean Shampoo ($5.99 atΒ Well.ca, drugstores and mass market stores). He actually read the instructions, leaving this shampoo for several minutes before rinsing. “I can feel it working,” he tells me. “It feels tingly.” That’s as much of a review one can get out of that guy. πŸ˜€ Anyways, this stuff is supposed to remove 100% of dandruff, buildup and grease. I admit that I’ve borrowed this in the shower as well, because I love the citrus-y, minty scent in the morning.

The one cologne he uses is YSL La Nuit De L’Homme Le Parfum. He doesn’t wear it everyday but when he does, it’s “because [he wants] to smell nice.” Ladies, if you haven’t sniffed this one yet, you must. πŸ™‚ It’s a very irresistible scent that’s light enough for the day, but it really is more of an evening cologne. From Fragrantica:Β top notes are bergamot, anise and pepper; middle notes are lavender, french labdanum and fruity notes; base notes are vetyver, patchouli and vanille.

What’s the man in your life (boyfriend / husband / brother / father) attitude towards beauty and grooming products? Does he love it as much as you, or is he a bit like Mr. Geeks?

  • I just managed to get my brother hooked on Hydraluron!

    • Whoa that’s a big deal! Does he usually take care of his skin?

  • /grunts. Bahahahaha, typical man! Love that the nail clipper is first. Mr. M clips over the toilet to avoid flying toenails. But he does get mad when he can’t find my toenail clipper. What is it with men and this device?

I bought Mr. M some face wash and he forgot about it less than two weeks later. He shaves his head and therefore doesn’t require shampoo, BUT he does use my nourishing hair conditioner to do it. Hmmm….. I will say that I continuously pick up high-end shaving cream samples for him and the skin on his head and face have never looked better.

Men everywhere: You look good when you take care of yourself. Do it!

    • It had to be first, Alison! πŸ™‚ He uses conditioner to shave? I do that, too!

I don’t even try buying him any grooming products anymore. It’s such a waste. πŸ˜‰

  • Hahaha I love this post! You totally should have used bacon as backdrop!

I need to look for a nail clipper like that one! I always hover around the boyfriend like a hawk when he clips his nails and bark “pick it up” once every three seconds. If I don’t I’m bound to find something on the floor and it’s yucky! Dr. D is definitely not big on product either. He wants “normal” shower gels, and that means he’s not into anything fancy like L’Occitane or even Kiehl’s. I guess I should be happy because he’s not stealing anything from me!

    • Using bacon would’ve been a huge waste of good food. πŸ˜› Ugh nails all over the place just gross me out.

  • Lol, this is such a cute post! I love it, haha! Mr Geeks really sounds like my bf, he doesn’t care too much for beauty things and his reviews are very straight forward, lol. Now that nail-clipper is a very neat idea tho, I haven’t seen something like this before!

    • The nail clipper is pretty sweet. πŸ™‚ Men are so funny like that.

  • Lorraine

This post is too funny! My hubs is similar=once he finds something he likes he will use it forever. Unless it gets discontinued. Cue the whine of rage…

    • Ahahahaha Lorraine that’s hilarious. They are so weird. Men.

  • Hahaha, too cute. S wore some YSL Homme cologne on our wedding day! (and I wore YSL Parisienne!) I have a nail clipper like that, too, that my mom gave me…and S steals it.

I had to give S a skincare “routine” (by which I mean, facial cleanser, moisturizer with sunscreen, moisturizer without sunscreen) because if not his face is scratchy and I care, hahaha.

    • Aren’t YSL fragrances just beautiful? The men’s colognes are so fresh. And I love Parisienne!

Hahaha what is it with boys and nail clippers? Mr. Geeks constantly complained of our old one before this Sally Hansen Holy Grail. LOL

Does he actually use all that stuff you give him? Bravo, Larie!

  • This is awesome, Arianne! My fiance is the same way – he’s been using the same products for years, possibly decades. I was able to get him to convert to, of all things, John Frieda Root Awakening shampoo (I bought it for me, didn’t love it, but noticed it was disappearing from the bottle with a quickness!) and Paula’s Choice SPF 40 when he goes golfing. It took years to get him to wear sunscreen! He loves the PC stuff b/c it absorbs immediately, isn’t greasy, and doesn’t leave a white cast.

    • Very nice! Glad he liked your hand-me-down shampoo. πŸ™‚

  • Margo@PrettyPandaMakeup

I love this!! Good surprise presents for any guy, and that clipper is awesome

    • Right? Here you go honey, have a new pair of nail clippers. πŸ™‚

  • Kassie lee

Omg i need these nail clippers for my boyfriend. He clips his nails everywhere and they end up in our bed and stuff in the bath mats which disgusts me beyound, this is a genius idea, i gotta go buy these tomorrow. We need to post guy post more often beauty bloggers

    • LOL go get the clippers!!

  • I LOVE this post Arianne! LOL about the bacon background!! That would have totally been appropriate – haha! I am totally going out and getting that clipper for my man. It IS genius, and I can see why he tells his friends all about it! πŸ™‚ Oh, and the “grunt” is a nice touch. πŸ˜‰

    • I just wanted the bacon for myself. πŸ˜› The clipper is a winner here, I see!

  • Ha Mr. Geeks. That clipper is genius, I didn’t even know they made clippers with the plastic thingy attached.

    • They are so handy, Kelly!

  • My mister is like Mr. Geeks, complete with “/grunts”. lol He sticks to what he likes but lately has been willing to try new things. Once in a while, I’ll catch him using my toner and moisturizer (“I just want to try”) so now I hunt around and try to bring home something new for him to try. Although, if he just uses what I’m using, it’ll make for less clutter in the bathroom…

    • Toner??? I’d say he’s pretty “advanced” in the skincare territory. πŸ˜›
