Makeup Tutorial: Emerald Green Cat Eye Liner

Here’s a short and sweet tutorial for you, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day! πŸ™‚

I find that some people want to try out colour in their makeup, but just don’t know how to do it in baby steps. When trying out a new colour, I pair it with the basics in small amounts, just to see how I like it. Having green beside my usual black eyeliner not only provides colour interest, but also defines my lash line as a black eyeliner would do on its own. This is a fun, easy way to incorporate any colour — not just emerald green — but if you like a themed look for St. Patrick’s Day, or are celebrating Pantone’s colour of the year, this is a great starting point for you!

Get the Look

  1. Start with a matte ivory eyeshadow (Laura Mercier Vanilla Nuts) all over the lid, up to the brow bone.
  2. Lightly define the crease with a matte medium brown eyeshadow (Laura Mercier Cafe au Lait).
  3. Line the top lash line thickly with a shimmery emerald pencil (Marcelle EmeraldΒ Waterproof Eyeliner). Wing out the liner to suit your eye shape.
  4. Define your lash line by lining with a black liquid liner (Maybelline Black Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner). Make sure there is more green than black showing, so go thin with this one.

I’m holding my new wireless shutter release from eBay, which makes photo sessions soooo much fun now.
Also, it’s multi-purpose: can also act as a microphone. What’s up! πŸ˜‰

Are you celebrating St. Patrick’s day? How do you wear emerald green in your makeup?

  • I love the emerald pencil, I would totally buy this if I could, the shimmers are so pretty! And yes, a coloured eye liner wing is really nice to venture into the world of colours. I also like it on the lower lash line, is fun too. You are looking really hot Arianne!

    • I do like the lower lash line pop, too, Teri! Let me know if you want a CP, I’d love to show you a bit of Canadian cosmetics. πŸ™‚

  • LOL Arianne I love love love this post! First of all, WHOA PRETTY EYELINER! Second, the last couple of pics really crack me up (and what a gorgeous ring)! I do this often enough myself. It’s so much fun! I think I’m in love with that Marcelle pencil too <3

    • Hahaha thanks Sunny! I was having too much fun… must do the wind machine more often LMAO.

  • Wow! That Marcelle liner looks amazing! The depth of shimmer is surprising for a drugstore product

    • It really is beautiful! πŸ™‚ You should give it a try.

  • Mariah is most definitely eating her heart out! You’re stunning, and your hair…wowza!

    • Hahaha too bad I can’t sing as well as her. πŸ˜› Thanks Alison! I got a blow dry so I wanted to show off the hair. πŸ˜€

  • You read my mind Arianne – this is exactly the makeup I’m planning to wear for Paddy’s Day! Love the addition of black liner to keep the eye defined, and it actually darkens the liner I’m going to wear (UD’s Covet) and makes it that much more snazzy πŸ˜› Looking FABULOUS, my dear!

    • Great minds, Latoya! πŸ˜€ Snazzypants!

  • daly_beauty

Drop dead gorgeous! You rock that colour! Also, I carry a fan with me at all times.

    • Bwahaha Jane I know. πŸ˜› That’s the only explanation for that hair.

  • Hahahahaha, Geekz. I love this! That pencil is so pretty! I wanted to buy some of the Marcelle pencils when I was in Vancouver, but boo, parabens πŸ˜› But I love the double liner look! I think I’m going to get a green liquid liner to play with.

    • Really? Damn parabens. What pencils can you use?

      • UD so far πŸ˜›

  • Aaahhh! So pretty!! that green looks amazing on you!

  • it is very neutral I like it

  • LOVE

  • Ahh the fan! I love it! You look smokin’. This is the perfect way to play with color and I love that shimmering emerald shade. Just stunning you are!

    • Hahhaa Taylor thank you doll.

  • Liz

  • sneha lin

definitely going to do this! I also love whatever you’re wearing on your lips….what is it???

    • It’s Burberry lip cover in Blush, and some random bronze lip gloss. πŸ™‚

  • SO pretty. I love the duo-liner look, and that lipstick shade is KILLER.

    • It’s my new Burberry + a lip gloss. I’ll do a post!

  • LOVE THE FAN ADDITION!! You look crazy fab like you’re in a music video! And the green winged liner is perfection. You go girl.

    • Thanks JennySue! *whips hair*

  • HAHAHA you are killing it in those windblown shots, love this. I definitely use this trick too, especially with golds. Don’t think I’ve ever used green this way though, will have to give it a shot πŸ™‚

    • Thank you MM! Try white also. πŸ™‚ I saw a girl in Mexico City wearing that eye look and it is gorgeous.

  • rockpaperbeauty

Lovely green eyeliner. I ended up going with green eyeshadows from MAC and e.l.f. on St. Patrick’s Day.

    • Which MAC green eyeshadows are your favourites, rockpaperbeauty? I love Swimming!

  • Glorious. Just glorious. The hair, the eyes, everything. I love it! I have been playing with a very similar look, actually, using RBR’s Devotion Ink liner in Amethyst Essence. It’s really fun and sparkly and not too opaque so it’s nice applied as a heavy, cat-eye. I LOVE this though–St. Patricks Day or no. I am definitely going out in search of an emerald-green shadow to replicate this asap!

    • Thanks Becca! I’m sure either Urban Decay or MUFE would have something. πŸ™‚

  • Ivy of

Love the combination of black liner + the green! Very smart as it makes it more wearable.

    • I think so, too, Ivy! Thanks!

  • Gorgeeeooouuussness. Love how green looks against your brown eyes, and yay for camera remote control!

  • Nan

lovely! what kind/brand of eyeshadow brushes did you use??

    • Hi Nan! The first brush is a flat eyeshadow brush (shu uemura natural brush 10), and the other is a pointed crease brush (MAC 226 – was limited edition).

      • Nan

Thanks Arianne! I have another question for you πŸ™‚ I am here in Niagara right now and was looking around at Shopper’s Drug Mart. (a dangerous store!!) I am from the US and would like your tips on what to purchase as far as products that are not available in the US. Would appreciate your input. THANKS!!

        • Sorry for the delay Nan! If you’re still here… Marcelle and Annabelle has excellent products. Also Joe Fresh!

          • Nan

Great! I ended up purchasing Bourjois mascaras and this bioderma make up remover that my sister wanted me to get for her.
