Bring On The Drama With Urban Decay Smoked Palette.

Urban Decay Smoked Palette — Packaging

So I’ve been wondering… why haven’t I heard of Urban Decay Smoked Palette ($58) as much as their Naked and Naked 2 palettes? I think it’s a great kit to get to round out your makeup arsenal. Out of the 10 eyeshadows, 4 shades are new and exclusive to this palette:

  • Kinky is a matte ivory. (exclusive shade)
  • Freestyle is a matte light peach. (exclusive shade)
  • Mushroom is a metallic mid-tone grey brown, or taupe.
  • Backdoor is a matte deep cool brown.
  • Blackout is a matte black.
  • Barlust is a metallic dark copper. (exclusive shade)
  • Rockstar is a shimmery deep aubergine.
  • Evidence is a metallic bright navy blue.
  • Loaded is a shimmery dark teal.
  • Asphalt is a shimmery gunmetal. (exclusive shade)

Also included in the zippered palette is a full-sized 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion. This is a creamy deep black that rivals my beloved Giorgio Armani waterproof liner. And of course, we all probably have one or more floating around in our makeup drawers: a mini squeezable Primer Potion also comes in the set. Smokey eye newbies might find the Get the Look Book pretty cool contains 12 different smokey eye charts to try (with step-by-step instructions!), ranging from polished daytime smokey eyes, to smokey cat eyes, to party girl smokey eyes.

Swatches: Kinky, Freestyle, Mushroom, Backdoor, Blackout

Swatches: Barlust, Rockstar, Evidence, Loaded, Asphalt, 24/7 Pencil in Perversion

Most of the eyeshadows are smooth and well-pigmented, but Evidence is a problem shade for me. It was dry and barely showed up in the swatches no matter how many times I try to layer it. I expected the dark mattes (Backdoor and Blackout) to be chalky in swatches (and they are chalky), but I found that they applied well on the eyes with little to no fallout. Shades Mushroom, Barlust and Rockstar had the best texture: smooth and opaque in one swipe.

Wearing Barlust all over lid, Toasted (from Naked Palette) on centre of lid, Backdoor on inner and outer crease, Blackout on inner and outer crease, and Perversion on top lash line and waterlines

What’s your go-to palette to create a smokey eye? 🙂 Did you pick up Urban Decay Smoked Palette?

  • Oh Arianne, this eye look you created is so glam! I didn’t pick this one up because the only shades I wanted are Mushroom and Loaded. Perhaps I’ll just purchase those individually. I seldom go all-out smokey nowadays, because I got a little too obsessed with bolder lipsticks!

    • Ohh, perfect Sunny! Hahaha I know what you mean with the smokey eyes. My eyes feel a little heavier when I wear so much eye makeup like this.

    Hi Arianne,
UD eyeshadow quality always wows me. My fave from this palette are asphalt and Barlust. I like the eye look you did. So pretty 🙂

    • Hi memoiselle! Yes, I really like these eyeshadows, and surprisingly they have less fallout than what I experienced in Naked 1!

  • This looks mostly lovely, but I’d hesitate to buy this palette because I’d never use the green + blue shades! I would think that one could easily create many smoky looks with the Naked palette, and someone who had it wouldn’t necessarily need this – the inclusion of the pencil is handy though!

    • Would you use the green and blue for liners, The Neemly? I think that’s how I’d use them for everyday use. I would lay down the Perversion pencil, smudge, then layer green or blue over top for a subtle coloured eyeliner look.

      • Hmm, perhaps I would? I guess I don’t experiment much with color and it might take some guts to try different things. The more I look at this palette the more I like it… would you recommend it over the Naked palette (as someone who owns neither but is considering getting a UD palette?) I like the matte shades in here quite a bit, and the mid-tone ones could work well for daytime looks I think…!

        • Honestly I never use my Naked Palette. I prefer my MAC neutral eyeshadows because they don’t have fall out problems. I found the Naked Palette eyeshadows to be mostly very powdery and they end up on my cheeks. I think a lot of people like Naked 2 better (but I don’t have that one).

I’d recommend this one if you are into using dark eyeshadows a lot. But if you’re doing neutrals, I’d try building my own palette. MAC is reasonably priced if you build a quad.

          • I use mostly MAC shadows in fact, but I find myself wishing for a bit more pigmentation/vibrancy sometimes. I thought UD shadows might be worth going for, at least to try – I actually really want an Hourglass duo, but when I look at the price tag of two of those vs. a UD palette, it almost seems silly to buy the Hourglass one! Have you tried any of theirs?

  • Lily

It’s beautiful! Well, the palette too, but the smokey eye you created is glam 🙂

  • Ooooo… looks very pretty. I don’t own any Urban Decay shadows but their eyeliners are my favourite.

    • Their eyeliners are awesome. I just finished Bourbon, a gorgeous shimmery brown. Which one is your favourite shade?

  • Appu

Love the look! Barlust is such a gorgeous shade! UD’s shadows and liners are the best!

  • great review! i have this palette and i absolutely love it. it’s totally underrated. love the eye look you created with it. 🙂

  • The mattes swatched poorly but look so great on your eye. I have been VERY tempted by this palette. I really need to play with more UD!

  • lilladylife

i think the palette shades look pretty nice but the actual EOTD is the show stopper!!! great use of the colors

  • Sue- Makeupmew

That’s a real sexy eye. I love this palette! The colors are gorgeous and it’s really value for money ;D

  • What a nice eye look. I think this palette would be a killer for my dry lids but they look so good on yours! Rockstar and Asphalt are right up my alley (I need dupes *Sigh*).

  • TracyBeautyReflections
