Still Scared of Orange Lips? Here are 3 More (Tamer) Ways to Wear the Trendy Colour for Spring and Summer.

So you’ve read our tips on how to pull off a full-on orange lip. You want to get in on the trend but when you tried it in store, you saw yourself transported back to the ’80s. I can totally understand. But just like the red lip, you can gradually work yourself up until you are ready to wear that neon orange shade.

While you are building up the courage to wear that orange pout loud and proud, here are three easier ways for you to rock the tangerine lips now.

#1 — Try a Bright Semi-Sheer Lipgloss.

You probably saw this coming; the easiest way to try a new bold shade is to go sheer. I’m not a lipgloss kinda girl but Annabelle has one of, if not the best lipglosses from the Canadian drugstore shelves.  Annabelle Volumelip Lip Plumping Gloss in So Sanguine ($8.50) is one of four new additions to the permanent colour range, and it is hot!  Like the other Volumelip shade I’ve tried, So Sanguine has the best consistency for layering and has no shimmer.

#2 — Go Get a Muted Orange Lipstick.

It might be a surprise to you but there are many different options out there when it comes to orange lipsticks.  You don’t have to wear a neon shade to start (or ever).  YSL Rouge Pur Couture in 16 Rouge Roxane ($37) is a great pick.  The shade is a bit hard to describe.  It’s a mix of rose, orange, and a tiny bit of gold sheen.  It’s very wearable even for the most conservative office.

#3 — Are You a Pink Lip Kinda Girl? Layer an Orange Lipgloss over Your Favourite Fuchsia Lipstick.

Ladies, you might want to sit down for this one because it will blow your mind! 🙂

Keep reading to see more photos!

Who knew that layering orange over a fuchsia makes the punchiest, juiciest lips ever?  I can’t take the credit for this one; I learned it from a shu uemura makeup artist when I got my shu uemura Rouge Unlimited in PK376 lipstick.  The result is a multi-dimensional lip colour that is wearable for both warm and cool skin tones.   As an added bonus, you get to wear two of the hottest colours for spring.  Yup, you’re welcome. 😉

Ohhh I like that last combo!!

    • Isn’t it awesome, Joy? I was surprised, too. It’s such a beautiful and juicy lip.

  • The orange over fuchsia is gorgeous! And I love your eye look in all of these photos!

    • Thank you Larie! 🙂 Hope you try the lip combo.

  • i agree with joy, that last combo is just gorgeous!

so sanguine is lovely, i should pick one up for myself 🙂

    • I just love So Sanguine. I got it in the swag bag from the Toronto Beauty Blogger meetup. 🙂 It was just meant to be, y’know?

  • The last combo is amazing! I lurv bright lips, but I can’t rock them quite as well as you~maybe someday xD I love your eye makeup here, it’s very springy.

    • I’m a bright lip whore now! LOL. You gotta try it. It changes your life. 🙂

  • These are some great options!

    I love layering peaches/oranges & pinks.. always a good look. :]

    • You’re absolutely right! I already layer light peach lipglosses over pink lipstick, but just never clued in that I could do it with bolder deeper shades. 🙂

  • Love orange lips! Can’t get enough of it 🙂

I’m really loving how that YSL lippy looks on you

    • Thanks, Jen! 🙂 You would definitely pull off the YSL, too. 🙂

  • Rae

LOVE option #3 – I’m definitely a pink gal 😛 & I have to ask, because the product photos look *amazing*: new camera, or just fantastic lighting?

    • Thanks, Rae! 🙂 Same camera, same lighting. The difference is that Arianne is finally fixing the exposure in Photoshop instead of iPhoto. 😉 Everything just looks more vibrant and true.

      • Rae

Lol! Atta girl 😛 The photos look great, either way! < 3

  • LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! I love those Annabelle lip glosses-need to get that one!

    • They are great glosses! Non-sticky and perfect pigmentation. So Sanguine is perfect for spring and summer.

  • I wanted to get into that trend too, but oranges tend to look horrid on me … so I tried NYX Femme, a hot pink that leans orange, and it looked cheap and awful on me (but beautiful in swatches). But I didn’t give up – I bought Revlon Colorburst lipstick in Coral and gloss in Papaya, and they look awesome on me 😀 I just needed a more red-toned orange evidently! Loving this trend now, it’s so fun for warm weather!

    • Great to hear you found your orange! 🙂 It’s a tricky one, especially for those who have more pink in their skin, but red-orange is definitely easier to wear.

  • WOW Arianne, sooo pretty! And LOVING the braided bangs 😉

Ok, ok, I’m one who’s wimpy and SCARED to try orange. I think all th ones I’ve tried were really light so they just looked awful on me! I really like the last one on you but I guess that’s cheating since it’s fushia and orange :P. I guess I’ll be on the hunt for MY perfect orange 🙂

    • It’s not cheating if it’s pretty, Elaine. 🙂

  • I loooove that last combo, u look gorgeous in all of them though 🙂 Honestly I’m not really scared of orange per say, it just doesn’t look the best on me. I compromise by wearing corals or more orange toned reds.

    • Thanks lady! You can totally rock that last shade. 🙂 It’s the perfect compromise.

  • Seriously, Arianne. You have The. Most. Perfect. Lips. And comnplexion. Everything is stunning on you.

    • Thank you Janine. 🙂 I am lucky to be blessed with full lips.

  • Um… complexion. GAH. Pooh on typos!

  • I love the YSL lipstick but can’t do red/orange colours as it makes my teeth look horribly yellow. ):

    • Yeah your teeth have to be pretty white to wear orange lips, absolutely. I tend to feel the same, but love orange lips too much. 🙂

  • How pretty is that liquid eyeliner on your eyes! Teal?

    • It’s a pencil actually. 🙂 But that liquid liner would work just as well… going to experiment with it tomorrow!

  • I’m so glad I came across your blog last night, been secretly loving this spring/summer’s orange lip trend but felt a bit timid. I just purchased the Annabelle lip gloss after reading this entry and LOVE IT! Perfect sheer orange to ease me into bolder colors later. I think I’ll have to give the YSL Rouge Roxanne a go now… 😉

    • Hi Huong! That’s such great news! 🙂 So glad to hear that you love So Sanguine as well.

  • To your question, not scared anymore! 🙂

I got an orange lipstick and have been wearing it for the past week, and loving it. My blog readers love them too. Didn’t realise orange lipstick complement me so well. 😀 I found 2 more orange tone lipsticks ( not true orange, but orange-based) in my stash. Will be wearing the 2nd one for the next week!

Thanks for writing about orange lips and the encouragement, Arianne.
