DIY Half Moon Manicure on a Lazy Sunday Afternoon.

I love Sunday afternoons because my creativity meter is at its fullest at this time. I had a lot of girly alone time this afternoon, so I wanted to try a half moon manicure that is oh so hot right now.

I always wanted to try this style but I lack hand eye coordination when it comes to painting my nails. So when I saw this clever tutorial that was posted on ChickAdvisor, I thought “hey, why not?”

The first step is to lay down a base colour.  This colour is for the base of the nail.  I chose a silver unnamed nail polish from FACES.

Once the base colour has dried completely, cut up a round 3-ring paper reinforcement sticker into half and place them at the base of the nail.  This acts as a guide to get that perfect half moon shape at the base.  Make sure the corners are taped down well.

Then, apply your next shade.  I chose OPI Yoga-ta Get This Blue, which is my only and most favourite blue ever.

Once the second colour has dried completely, peel off the stickers.

Lastly, adore those hot nails.

I am so pleased with the results that I can’t stop staring at my nails now.  Pretty good for an amateur, eh?  Have you tried this trend, or will you be trying it in the near future? 🙂  What colour combination should I try next?

  • That looks great! I think I’m going to go do this right now since my nail polish is chipping off! Hope I have as much success as you did and I love the colour combo you used! 🙂

    • I’d love to see photos if you redo your manicure! 🙂

  • i LOVE it! i’m gonna try some gradation type designs soon :). i have very little patience when it comes to nail polish, though (i can barely wait for them to dry :p) so we’ll see how that works. haha!

    • I’m a novice with these types of things, and failed at the gradation design. I’d like to see what you come up with. 🙂

  • OMG love this so much! Plus I have plenty of those sticky things lying around, gotta try this soon

    • I know!!! I’m so happy to see some of these stickers in BF’s office supply stash.

  • awesome! I love the combo. The blue is SO electrifying too. LOVE IT!

    • Seriously, such a great blue!

  • Kat

  • I think it looks pretty neat 🙂 I did the same thing last week with black and red

    • Thanks lady! Black and red sounds hot! 🙂

  • That blue colour is really pretty!

    • It’s a great blue! Not sure if it was LE, but if it’s permanent you should definitely get it. 🙂

Lovely, lovely! I’d definitely pull out Yoga-ta and do this… if I did my nails.

    Which I do not.

Because I am hopelessly picky and lazy >.<

    • Hahaha do it! Or do your toes!!! 🙂

  • This really looks gorgeous!!

    • Doesn’t it? 🙂 I hope you give it a try sometime.

  • Great look! And thanks for the link love 😉

We have been getting a lot of great feedback and advice about this technique, one which I think will be a huge help to your readers.

Our friends at Brill Communications suggest you take the sticker off right away – as the second colour coat dries, it becomes more tacky and will pull away a little more messily than ripping it off bandaid style.

    Here’s more info:

    • Thanks for the advice! I’m so bad with manicures though that if I goop on too much polish, it might drip down to my cuticles.

  • That OPI polish is a really beautiful colour.

    • It is such a gorgeous colour, eh? 🙂

  • So totally doing this when my nails grow back! Easy and looks fantastic!

    • Yay! I’d love to see your nails when you do. 🙂

  • Love love love! I need to do this to my nails soon.

  • I did this a few months ago with gold and brown; received a lot of compliments and I did admire the finished product however unlikely I will ever do it again! I don’t think I have the patience to do more detailed nail polishing! lol

  • You did an amazing job with it!! I’m so impressed!

  • superb design… surely try this…

    • I’d love to see if you try it out!

  • I absolutely love this trend, even though i was slightly suspicious about it before. i usually go for the fizzy orange and taupe – combo, which is really nice during autumn
