Let’s talk skincare! I know skincare is not as appealing as say, a beautiful lipstick or blush (or all things Chanel), but it’s important to take care of your skin especially if you are wearing a lot of products everyday.
I recently visited Pure + simple Spa, an all natural and organic spa with locations in Toronto and Oakville, a.k.a. the place for the best facials in Toronto. This time I opted for their Super Hydrating facial, particularly because my skin has been feeling tight and congested in addition to being oily. I absolutely love how my skin looked and felt immediately after my facial that I decided to bring home some of their products.
Before I begin, I must warn you that I’m kinda starting to build a mini Pure + simple store on my vanity. And also, that I paid for the facial and the products featured here.

Pure + simple All Natural Sunscreen for Oily / Impure Skin SPF 30
$15.95 for 50ml / $25.95 for 100ml
I have been using this daily and liked it so much that it made my Top 10 Products of Summer 2010. What’s great about this sunscreen (besides the fact that it’s all natural) is that it goes on without being greasy, so I don’t have to worry about looking like a greasy frying pan while being protected from sun damage. For those who do not have very pale skin, you may want to wear either a tinted moisturizer or a powder over this, because it goes on geisha white.
Martina Gebhardt Black Mud Cream
$48.95 for 50ml
This citrusy fresh cream is very greasy, so I use it strictly on evenings before bedtime. It is thick and a tad difficult to work into my skin, so I like layering it over a serum (more on this later!). I realize not everyone may enjoy this heaviness, especially those with oily skin but I will say this: the more I put on in the evening, the plumper and brighter my skin looks in the morning. It’s magical, I tell you!

Pure + simple Algae Serum
$20.95 for 50ml / $42.95 for 100ml
Did you know that what we call our skin types (dry, normal, combination, or oily) only tell us the level of oil in the skin? But just as important is how properly hydrated your skin is (the level of water in your skin). If you live in the city, most likely you have dehydrated skin due to environmental factors or lack of water intake. This algae serum feels like water that instantly cools and hydrates the skin. This is nice for a little bit extra hydration in the evening, but I also use it during the day before my moisturizer. My only annoyance is the serum’s earthy smell — it smells exactly like button mushrooms, which I like to eat, but don’t necessarily want to smother onto my face. At least once you layer a moisturizer or cream over it, you can’t smell it at all. Great for very dehydrated skin, but I wouldn’t consider it a must have.
Pure + simple Skin Drink Unscented Lotion
$19.95 for 50ml / $32.95 for 100ml
This unscented moisturizer is great both for day and night. The website describes it as a lightweight moisturizer, but to me it feels more of a medium weight moisturizer. Two pumps are enough for my face and neck. I think I’ve found my everyday moisturizer for years to come. I’ve recently developed sensitivity and redness around my nose, and most drugstore moisturizers sting the area. I get none of that with Skin Drink. I like that it is very hydrating, yet non-greasy so it’s perfect for those of us who are on the oily side. It would work great for all skin types.
Have You Gone Natural with Your Skincare?
If so, what’s your experience been like? Any favourite products? If not, what’s stopping you from making the switch? I know price has been a factor for me in the past, but recently I’ve been feeling my skin change and decided to just go for it.
